Gingivitis is a common and mild form of periodontal disease caused by inflammation of the gingiva, leading to symptoms of irritation, redness, and swelling of the gum that lines the base of the teeth.

Herbal Bilberry Processed Anti Alzheimer's disease Potency in Vitro and Vivo
Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.

Epidemiological studies suggested that Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time.
Although, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such a mutated gene are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.
More precisely, any one of a number of different single-gene mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 was found to induce the onset of AD.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) investigated the effects of anthocyanoside extracts (Vaccinium myrtillus anthocyanoside (VMA)) obtained from bilberry on the in vitro progression of Aβ fibril formation and in vivo effects of this compound on AD pathogenesis.
In Neuro2a cells, injection of VMA inhibited the in vitro formation of Aβ peptide fibrils in the induction of neuron toxicity.
Furthermore, A diet containing 1% VMA prevented the cognitive degeneration was found in the tested AD mice.
Interestingly, this diet in the retention of cognitive ability was not accompanied by a reduction in the aggregate deposition in brains but rather, an increase in insoluble deposits, compared to control mice.
The results suggested that VMA shows a strong effect on Alzheimer's disease by altering the Aβ aggregation to a non-toxic form.
In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti AD activity, researchers elucidated the effects of different polyphenols on neuroprotection and APP processing under different in vitro stress conditions.
Injection of myricetin, quercetin or anthocyanin-rich extracts in a dose-dependent manner significantly inhibited the overexpression of free radicals caused by the application of Menadione.
APdE9 mice fed with anthocyanin-rich bilberry or blackcurrant extracts showed decreased APP C-terminal fragment levels, the amyloid precursor protein in the cerebral cortex, compared to APdE9 mice on the control diet.
Levels of soluble Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels were found to significantly decrease in bilberry-fed mice, compared to blackcurrant-fed mice.
Additionally, the bilberry diet also improved the spatial working memory of aged APdE9 mice, compared to mice on the control diet.
Based on the findings, Dr. Vepsäläinen S, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These data suggest that anthocyanin-rich bilberry and blackcurrant diets favorably modulate APP processing and alleviate behavioral abnormalities in a mouse model of AD".
Taken altogether, bilberry rich of anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. Bromelain Promotes and Removes Eschar In Burn Wounds, Human Trials Show
Eschar is a dry, dark scab of dead skin associated with a certain skin condition.
Most cases of eschar are associated with burning or cauterizing that stop bleeding, or prevent the spread of infection.
Most common causes of eschar are burned, a condition that causes severe skin damage. Burn wound can recover without serious health consequences in a few days or weeks depending on the size of the burns.
Burns depending on the severity can be classified into
* First-degree burns affect only the epidermis or outer layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of is red, painful, dry, and with no blisters on the affected site.
* Second-degree burns affect the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of red, blistered, and swollen and painful on the affected site.

More precisely, most patients support the use of Nexobrid® debridement for the treatment of removed eschar in burn wounds and reduced blood loss.
After taking other factors into account, Dr. Hirche C, the lead researcher wrote, "This consensus document may serve as a preliminary guideline for the use of enzymatic debridement with user-oriented recommendations until further evidence and systematic guidelines are available".

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, according to studies.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.
According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Approximately, 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, representing 31% of all global deaths.
The most common risk factors associated with CVD are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.
Patients with CVD mostly were found to have some intermediate conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose and being overweight and obese.
Most common symptoms of CVD include persistent chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomforts, and conditions associated with lower blood circulation due to narrowing blood vessels such as shortness of breath, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms.
Some people before having a CVD may also experience symptoms of pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the differentiation of natural compounds for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers in a joint study led by the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra examined the effects of regular consumption of bilberries on CVD risk reduction.
Women (n=25) and men (n=11) included in the study were asked to consume 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.
At the end of the study, the consumption of bilberries showed a significant decrease of risk factors associated with the onset of CVD, including total cholesterol (P=.017), LDL-C (P=.0347), TG (P=.001), glucose (P=.005), albumin (P=.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (P=.046), and a positive increase in HDL-C (P=.044).
In men, larger favorable changes were found in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C (P=.009) compared to women.
Interestingly, the injection of bilberry over the period was not induced favorable change but an increase of LDL-C.
Dr, Habanova M, the lead scientist after taking into co and confounders, said, "the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".
Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry anti CVD effects, researchers investigated the effect of bilberry juice on serum and plasma biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status in subjects with elevated levels of at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
The randomized controlled trial included participants consumed either bilberry juice (n = 31) or water (n = 31) for 4 weeks.
Injection of bilberry juice resulted in a significant decrease in plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-15, and monokine induced by INF-gamma (MIG).
However, an increase in the plasma concentration of tumor nuclear factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) involved in the acute phase of systematic inflammation was also observed in the bilberry group.
Bilberry juice exerted a significant effect in modulating the protein associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines, through activation of a transcription factor, a crucial protein (nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kappaB)) associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.
According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Approximately, 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, representing 31% of all global deaths.
The most common risk factors associated with CVD are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.

Women (n=25) and men (n=11) included in the study were asked to consume 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.
At the end of the study, the consumption of bilberries showed a significant decrease of risk factors associated with the onset of CVD, including total cholesterol (P=.017), LDL-C (P=.0347), TG (P=.001), glucose (P=.005), albumin (P=.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (P=.046), and a positive increase in HDL-C (P=.044).
In men, larger favorable changes were found in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C (P=.009) compared to women.
Interestingly, the injection of bilberry over the period was not induced favorable change but an increase of LDL-C.
Dr, Habanova M, the lead scientist after taking into co and confounders, said, "the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".
Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry anti CVD effects, researchers investigated the effect of bilberry juice on serum and plasma biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status in subjects with elevated levels of at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
The randomized controlled trial included participants consumed either bilberry juice (n = 31) or water (n = 31) for 4 weeks.
Injection of bilberry juice resulted in a significant decrease in plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-15, and monokine induced by INF-gamma (MIG).
However, an increase in the plasma concentration of tumor nuclear factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) involved in the acute phase of systematic inflammation was also observed in the bilberry group.
Bilberry juice exerted a significant effect in modulating the protein associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines, through activation of a transcription factor, a crucial protein (nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kappaB)) associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.

Herbal Artichoke Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Onset of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in Vivo and Human Study
Non-alcoholic liver disease is a medical condition caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol.
Believe it or not, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) now becomes a universal disorder and the most common liver disease in the Western world.
According to the statistics in 2015, approximately, 20 to 30% of the general population in the Western world suffer from NAFLD. The prevalent rate is substantially higher in the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (70%) and morbid obesity (90%).
Some researchers in the assessment of the relationship of widespread obesity in the risk of NAFLD suggested that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may be caused by the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Kristen Stephenson, in the assessment of the impact of dietary fat on the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in animal model, wrote, "WD mouse models consisting of high fat, cholesterol, and a combination of high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, or glucose not only lead to metabolic syndrome but also induce NAFLD with fibrosis".

Researchers on finding a natural therapeutic for the treatment of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide investigated the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) therapeutic utility in patients with established NAFLD.
The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial included 100 subjects with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD randomized to either ALE 600 mg daily or placebo for a 2-month period.
Compared to the control, the ALE treatment group showed increased hepatic vein flow, reduced portal vein diameter and liver size, according to the Doppler sonography. In other words, ALE treatment improved liver function.
Inflammatory and oxidative stress such as serum ALT, AST levels and total bilirubin were also decreased upon the injection of ALE observed by the improved AST/ALT ratio.
Furthermore, ALE supplementation also reduced total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. All these parameters were elevated in patients with NAFLD.
Dr. Panahi Y, the lead scientist, after taking into account other factors, wrote, " This study has shown beneficial effects of ALE supplementation on both ultrasound liver parameters and liver serum parameters (ALT, AST, APRI ratio, and total bilirubin) in patients with NAFLD".
In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti NAFLD activity, researchers elucidated the physiological responses and mechanisms of JA intervention with comprehensive transcriptome analysis.
The study included Wistar rats fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks with an oral glucose tolerance test was carried out on day 21.
According to the assays, dietary JA supplementation improved the IR and hepatic TAG accumulation induced by the Fructose feeding.
JA also inhibited the gene expression of malic enzyme 1 (Me1), associated with fatty acid synthesis; decorin (Dcn), related to fibrosis; and cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily a, polypeptide 2 (Cyp1a2) and nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (Nampt), associated with inflammation.
Based on these results, researchers proposed that 10 % of JA supplementation may be beneficial for the prevention of the onset of NAFLD.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial included 100 subjects with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD randomized to either ALE 600 mg daily or placebo for a 2-month period.
Compared to the control, the ALE treatment group showed increased hepatic vein flow, reduced portal vein diameter and liver size, according to the Doppler sonography. In other words, ALE treatment improved liver function.
Inflammatory and oxidative stress such as serum ALT, AST levels and total bilirubin were also decreased upon the injection of ALE observed by the improved AST/ALT ratio.

Furthermore, mice fed with 10% anthocyanin-rich extract revealed significantly less mean tumor numbers, compared to control (n = 14) and anthocyanin 1% treated mice.
The results suggested that anthocyanins inhibited the formation and growth of colorectal cancer in an animal model.

A(V.uli), 5 main components: delphinidin (40.70 ± 1.72)%, cyanidin (3.40 ± 0.68)%, petunidin (17.70 ± 0.54)%, peonidin (2.90 ± 0.63)% and malvidin (35.50 ± 1.11)% were found in the anthocyanins extract.
Malvidin, the derivatives found in the extracts exerted the strongest anti-colon cancer cell properties with dose-dependent repression of cancer cell proliferation with an IC(50) (50% inhibitory concentration) value of 50 µg/ml, compared to other derivatives.
Dr. Zu XY and colleagues wrote in the final report, "The extraction protocol and conditions we used were effective for anthocyanin extraction. A(V.uli) could be a feasible practical research tool and a promising therapeutic source to suppress human colon or colorectal cancers".

Cancer is a class of chronic and medical conditions caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Arnica may have a profound and therapeutic effect in reducing the risk of diseases associated with overexpression oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Dr. Ercal N, the lead author in the study of the relation of toxic metals and oxidative stress, wrote, "antioxidants may play an important role in abating some hazards of heavy metals. In order to prove the importance of using antioxidants in heavy metal poisoning, pertinent biochemical mechanisms for metal-induced oxidative stress".
There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.
Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.
Certain chronic diseases are found to be associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

Under oxidative stress conditions caused by the injection of Ca(2+) and inorganic phosphate, tested group with a dose of Arnica 30cH demonstrated the effect in decreasing mitochondrial O(2), an indication of lesser expression of free radicals presented in the mitochondrion, through the herbal antioxidant activity.
In liver tissues, administration of Anise at dose 30cH in the tested group also protected the hepatic mitochondrial membrane permeabilization by inhibited ROS on the induction of lipid peroxidation and precipitated fragmentation of proteins.
Further evaluation of the study showed that these results of free radical inhibitory effect were attributed to levels of antioxidants from the herb and the herb in the stimulated production of antioxidants of the tested host.
Additionally, in the investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanism of action of A. Montana flower methanol extract (AMME) against both inflammation and oxidative stress in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model, scientists suggested that oral administration of AMME reduces clinical signs and improves the histological and radiological status of the hind limb joints, through reducing overexpression of levels of nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12) and titer of anti-type II collagen antibody activated by high levels of oxidative stress.
This inhibitory effect of AMME against overproduction inflammatory factors not only reverses the disturbed antioxidant levels and peroxidative damage but also inhibits the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in facilitated cell damage and healthy cell death at the site of infection.
Moreover, according to the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, the function of Arnica in the alleviation of arthritis by ameliorating ROS expression was attributed to the combined action of phenolic and flavonoid compounds.
Dr. Sharma S, the lead author said, " The study also shed some light on mechanisms involved in the diminution of inflammatory mediators and free radical-generating toxicants and enhancement of the antioxidant armory, thereby preventing further tissue damage, injury and synovial hyperproliferation in arthritis".
The above differentiation was supported by the National Institute of Research and Development for Biological Sciences study of A. montana and A. absinthium ethanolic extracts antioxidant activity and protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in a mouse fibroblast-like NCTC cell line.
According to the final assessment, researchers suggested that both A. absinthium and A. montana extract showed a strong antioxidant capacity but lesser in A. montana, compared to A. absinthium.
At the doses of the range of 10-100 mg/L and A. montana and 10-500 mg/L A. absinthium, both extracts exhibited a significant oxygen radical absorbance capacity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical-scavenging activity and protected fibroblast cells against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage, depending on the levels of flavonoids and phenolic acids contents presented in the extracts.
According to the neutral red and lactate dehydrogenase assays, pretreatment with 10 mg/L A. montana and 10-300 mg/L A. absinthium was considered the best protection against the early onset of ROS production in H2O2-induced oxidative stress in a mouse fibroblast-like NCTC cell line.
Importantly, pre-treatment with A. montana and A. absinthium extracts also restored the proportion of cells in each phase of the cell cycle through inhibiting oxidative stress in the induction of cytotoxicity.
Taken together, Arnica and its bioactive chemical may be considered a functional food in reduced inflammatory-related diseases caused by overexpression of oxidative stress. However, the intake of Arnica supplements should be taken with extreme care for the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

Under oxidative stress conditions caused by the injection of Ca(2+) and inorganic phosphate, tested group with a dose of Arnica 30cH demonstrated the effect in decreasing mitochondrial O(2), an indication of lesser expression of free radicals presented in the mitochondrion, through the herbal antioxidant activity.
In liver tissues, administration of Anise at dose 30cH in the tested group also protected the hepatic mitochondrial membrane permeabilization by inhibited ROS on the induction of lipid peroxidation and precipitated fragmentation of proteins.
Further evaluation of the study showed that these results of free radical inhibitory effect were attributed to levels of antioxidants from the herb and the herb in the stimulated production of antioxidants of the tested host.
Additionally, in the investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanism of action of A. Montana flower methanol extract (AMME) against both inflammation and oxidative stress in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model, scientists suggested that oral administration of AMME reduces clinical signs and improves the histological and radiological status of the hind limb joints, through reducing overexpression of levels of nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12) and titer of anti-type II collagen antibody activated by high levels of oxidative stress.
This inhibitory effect of AMME against overproduction inflammatory factors not only reverses the disturbed antioxidant levels and peroxidative damage but also inhibits the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in facilitated cell damage and healthy cell death at the site of infection.
Moreover, according to the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, the function of Arnica in the alleviation of arthritis by ameliorating ROS expression was attributed to the combined action of phenolic and flavonoid compounds.
Dr. Sharma S, the lead author said, " The study also shed some light on mechanisms involved in the diminution of inflammatory mediators and free radical-generating toxicants and enhancement of the antioxidant armory, thereby preventing further tissue damage, injury and synovial hyperproliferation in arthritis".
The above differentiation was supported by the National Institute of Research and Development for Biological Sciences study of A. montana and A. absinthium ethanolic extracts antioxidant activity and protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in a mouse fibroblast-like NCTC cell line.
According to the final assessment, researchers suggested that both A. absinthium and A. montana extract showed a strong antioxidant capacity but lesser in A. montana, compared to A. absinthium.
At the doses of the range of 10-100 mg/L and A. montana and 10-500 mg/L A. absinthium, both extracts exhibited a significant oxygen radical absorbance capacity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical-scavenging activity and protected fibroblast cells against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage, depending on the levels of flavonoids and phenolic acids contents presented in the extracts.
According to the neutral red and lactate dehydrogenase assays, pretreatment with 10 mg/L A. montana and 10-300 mg/L A. absinthium was considered the best protection against the early onset of ROS production in H2O2-induced oxidative stress in a mouse fibroblast-like NCTC cell line.
Importantly, pre-treatment with A. montana and A. absinthium extracts also restored the proportion of cells in each phase of the cell cycle through inhibiting oxidative stress in the induction of cytotoxicity.
Taken together, Arnica and its bioactive chemical may be considered a functional food in reduced inflammatory-related diseases caused by overexpression of oxidative stress. However, the intake of Arnica supplements should be taken with extreme care for the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke, the Potent Antioxidant
Oxidative stress is a condition caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host, leading to lipid and protein damage and alternation of cell DNA.
Oxidative stress has been found to initiate the onset of chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.
Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to steal or donate an electron from or to other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of energy and essential molecules and boosting the immune system.
Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation.
In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals that bombard our body every day.
However, in less healthy people, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich with antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated artichoke antioxidant activity, compared to those of Ficus carica, and Morus nigra and their herbal mixture (CFM) in vitro, using CCl4 induced damage in HepG2 cells.
CFM at 1 mg/ml showed a 47.00% and 37.09% decline of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, the oxidative stress markers and an increase of the glutathione and superoxide dismutase 77.32% and 101.02%, the antioxidants produced by the host, comparable to CCl4 treated cells.
The antioxidant activity of fig and artichoke was attributed to the existence of different phenolic metabolites that act synergistically.

With an aim to reveal more information about the artichoke antioxidant effects, researchers launched a comprehensive evaluation of the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) leaf and tuber extract.
According to the results from the analysis, leaf extract exhibited a higher content of phenols and flavonoids comparing to tuber extracts (5.07 and 7.14 fold higher, respectively).
The application of tuber extract at concentrations (25-500 μg·ml- 1) had a positive effect on fibroblast growth.
In the fibroblast cell line, tuber and leaf extracts increase the expression of the ROS SOD-1 inactivating enzyme gene associated with apoptotic signaling and cell death without affecting the levels of Nox-4 antioxidant activity.
Dr. Nizioł-Łukaszewska Z and colleagues, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Jerusalem artichoke leaves and tubers extracts affect the cell proliferation and can alter the expression of genes related to oxidative stress".
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS), pending to the confirmation of larger sample and multicenter human study.

Oxidative stress has been found to initiate the onset of chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.
Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to steal or donate an electron from or to other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of energy and essential molecules and boosting the immune system.
Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation.
In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals that bombard our body every day.
However, in less healthy people, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich with antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated artichoke antioxidant activity, compared to those of Ficus carica, and Morus nigra and their herbal mixture (CFM) in vitro, using CCl4 induced damage in HepG2 cells.
CFM at 1 mg/ml showed a 47.00% and 37.09% decline of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, the oxidative stress markers and an increase of the glutathione and superoxide dismutase 77.32% and 101.02%, the antioxidants produced by the host, comparable to CCl4 treated cells.
The antioxidant activity of fig and artichoke was attributed to the existence of different phenolic metabolites that act synergistically.
Dr. Youssef FS, the lead scientist said, "a herbal mixture composed of blackberry, artichoke, and fig could afford an excellent natural candidate to combat oxidative stress and counteract hepatic toxins owing to its phenolic compounds".
With an aim to reveal more information about the artichoke antioxidant effects, researchers launched a comprehensive evaluation of the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) leaf and tuber extract.
According to the results from the analysis, leaf extract exhibited a higher content of phenols and flavonoids comparing to tuber extracts (5.07 and 7.14 fold higher, respectively).
The application of tuber extract at concentrations (25-500 μg·ml- 1) had a positive effect on fibroblast growth.
In the fibroblast cell line, tuber and leaf extracts increase the expression of the ROS SOD-1 inactivating enzyme gene associated with apoptotic signaling and cell death without affecting the levels of Nox-4 antioxidant activity.
Dr. Nizioł-Łukaszewska Z and colleagues, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Jerusalem artichoke leaves and tubers extracts affect the cell proliferation and can alter the expression of genes related to oxidative stress".
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS), pending to the confirmation of larger sample and multicenter human study.
