Dong Ling Cao Or Bing Ling Cao (Herba Rabdosime Rubescentis)

Dong Ling Cao Or Bing Ling Cao is also known as blushred rabdosia. The bitter, sweet and slightly cold herb has been used in TCM to treat cancer of esophagus, breast and liver, swelling of throat, insect bites, snake bites, inflammation of the tonsils, etc., as it clears heat and toxins, nourishes yin, removes blood stasis and relieves swelling and pain, etc., by enhancing the functions of stomach, lung and liver channels.

Health Benefits

1. Lymphoid malignancies
In the investigation of Oridonin, a diterpenoid purified from Rabdosia rubescens and its inhibition of the proliferation of cells from lymphoid malignancies in association with blockade of the NF-kappa B signal pathways, found that oridonin, a natural diterpenoid purified from Rabdosia rubescens, inhibited growth of multiple myeloma (MM; U266, RPMI8226), acute lymphoblastic T-cell leukemia (Jurkat), and adult T-cell leukemia (MT-1) cells with an effective dose that inhibited 50% of target cells (ED50) ranging from 0.75 to 2.7 microg/mL, and inhibited nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) DNA-binding activity in these cells as measured by luciferase reporter gene, ELISA-based, and electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Oridonin also blocked tumor necrosis factor-alpha- and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated NF-kappa B activity in Jurkat cells as well as RAW264.7 murine macrophages. Of note, oridonin decreased survival of freshly isolated adult T-cell leukemia (three samples), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (one sample), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (one sample), non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (three samples), and MM (four samples) cells from patients in association with inhibition of NF-kappa B DNA-binding activity, according to “Oridonin, a diterpenoid purified from Rabdosia rubescens, inhibits the proliferation of cells from lymphoid malignancies in association with blockade of the NF-kappa B signal pathways” by Ikezoe T, Yang Y, Bandobashi K, Saito T, Takemoto S, Machida H, Togitani K, Koeffler HP, Taguchi H.(1).

2. Anti cancers
In the assessment of sesquiterpene oridonin, an isoprenoid, isolated from Rabdosia rubescens, for its biological activity against human cell lines derived from prostate (DU-145, LNCaP), breast (MCF-7), and ovarian (A2780 and PTX10) cancers, found that Oridonin exhibited anti-proliferative activity toward all cancer cell lines tested, with an IC50 estimated by the MTT cell viability assay ranging from 5.8+/-2.3 to 11.72+/-4.8 microM as oridonin inhibits cancer cell growth in a cell cycle specific manner and shifts the balance between pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins in favor of apoptosis. The present data suggest that further studies are warranted to assess the potential of oridonin in cancer prevention and/or treatment, according to “The cytostatic and cytotoxic effects of oridonin (Rubescenin), a diterpenoid from Rabdosia rubescens, on tumor cells of different lineage” by Chen S, Gao J, Halicka HD, Huang X, Traganos F, Darzynkiewicz Z.(2).

3. Immunological activity
In the selection of a good method for purifying polysaccharides from Rabdosia rubescens, and study their immunological activity, found that Polysaccharides from Rabdosia rubescens by stepwise ethanol precipitation show stronger immunological activity. Their immunomodulatory effect and related mechanism will be researched further, according to “[Effect of separation and purification processes on extraction ratio of polysaccharides in Rabdosia rubescens and immunocompetence].[Article in Chinese]” by Liu F, Liu PY, Hao LF, Zhou J.(3).

4. Chronic pharyngitis
In the evaluation of the clinical therapeutic effect of Rabdosia rubescens aqueous extract on chronic pharyngitis and its safety, found that after the patients had consumed Rabdosia rubescens aqueous extract and the placebo for 30 days, the improvement rates of main clinical symptom and signs in the interventional group were 67.31% and 61.54%, while those in placebo group were 19.23% and 11.54%, with significant difference (P<0.05). Before the experiment, the integral of main clinical symptom and signs between the two groups did not show significant difference (P>0.05). But after 30 days, the integral of main clinical symptom and signs in the interventional group significantly decreased (P<0.05), compared with itself before the experiment and the placebo group, according to “[Therapeutic effect of Rabdosia rubescens aqueous extract on chronic pharyngitis and its safety].[Article in Chinese]” by Ma Z, Hu C, Zhang Y.(4).

5. Anti gingivitis
In the investigation of the efficacy of rabdosia rubescens against gingivitis and comparison of the therapeutic efficacy of different dosage forms of rabdosia rubescens, randomly assigned to two groups: test group (n=67), in which rabdosia rubescens drop pill (960 mg) and 4 tablets of simulation agent of rabdosia rubescen were orally given to the subjects three times a day for 5 days; and control group (n=69), in which the subjects were administered the tablets of rabdosia rubescens (1000 mg) and 24 drop pills of simulation agent of rabdosia rubescens thrice daily for 5 days. found that in the two groups, the subjects who were given rabdosia rubescens, drop pill or tablet, had a decrease in total scores and scores for each clinical symptom when compared with those before treatment (P<0.01). There was significant difference in the therapeutic efficacy between the test group and the control group with the efficacy rate being 92.54% and 79.71% respectively (P<0.05), according to “Efficacy of rabdosia rubescens in the treatment of gingivitis” by Chen S, Liu J, Zhang H.(5).
