                         Thyroid disease

Thyroid disease is defined as a condition of malfunction of thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is over active and produces too much thyroid hormones.

                       Thyroid adenoma

Thyroid adenoma is a benign tumor started in the layer of cell lined the inner surface of the thyroid gland. The disease are relatively common among adults living in the United States. According to the study by the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation, there is a report of 4 patients described in whom a follicular carcinoma developed following thyroidectomy for a benign follicular neoplasm. Most thyroid nodules are Thyroid adenoma.

F.2. In Herbal medicine perspective
1. Green tea
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major catechin in green tea, was shown to possess remarkable therapeutic potential against various types of human cancer cells in in vitro and in vivo models. In the study to investigate the effect of EGCG on the proliferation and apoptosis of ARO cells–human ATC cells, showed that EGCG treatment inhibited the growth of ARO cells in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, EGCG suppressed phosphorylation of EGFR, ERK1/2, JNK, and p38. These changes were associated with increased p21 and reduced cyclin B1/CDK1 expression. In addition, EGCG treatment increased the accumulation of sub-G1 cell, activated caspase-3 and cleaved PARP(43).

2. Polentilla alba
The main tasks during treatment of hyperplastic thyroid diseases–to stop the growth of thyroid nodules; compensation of hypothyrosis; normalization of thyroid size. One of the perspective methods in combine therapy of diffuse and mix goiter is a phytotherapy. The most often for thyroid diseases we have used the plant drug Polentilla alba, which on Ukrainian market was registered as “Alba”. Investigation has shown, that phytodrug of Polentilla alba could be recommended for monotherapy and for combine conservative therapy of diffuse and mix benign euthyroid goiter, and also for complex treatment of toxic and hypothyroid goiters, according to the strudy by Kvacheniuk AN and Kvacheniuk EL(44). Other study indicated that in patients with thyroid pathology (diffuse nontoxic goiter, hyperthyroidism and chronic thyroiditis) it was possible to reduce the volume of thyroid, normalize its function, and decrease the level of AB-r TSH in diffuse toxic goiter. We also found approximately 20 % shortening of the time needed to get target level of TSH and finally the duration of treatment of thyrotoxicosis(45).

3. Shilajit (Fulvic Acid)
Shilajit is a multi-component natural occurring mineral substance used in Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine which originated in India. According to the article of A NATURAL CURE FOR THYROID NODULES, posted in Coffey’s place, “Fulvic Acid is accredited with many healing properties. One of the ways it is supposed to work on thyroid nodules is as a chelator and detoxifier of heavy metals, chemical toxins and radiation from the body. It delivers a tremendous amount of nutrients and minerals straight to the cells, and is considered a natural adaptogen and a strong antioxidant”(46).
